FAQ's and tips
"I plugged a used BCM into my car and now it starts and dies. Why?"The factory alarm system (VTSS) is automatically learned by the PCM (engine computer). If your vehicle does not have a factory alarm, and you plug a used BCM (body computer) into it from another car that is equipped with security, then the PCM "learns" that it is now equipped also and will prevent starting until it is told by the BCM to allow starting. Since your car likely does not have the equipment necessary to operate these security systems, the BCM will not allow this. You will need to have VTSS removed from both modules. We can do this for you.
"How do I tell if a BCM is equipped with factory alarm (VTSS) or not?"
This can be difficult since the BCM part numbers are the same for vehicles with and without factory security. Chrysler has a database of how the vehicles are equipped, so, if you know the VIN of the donor vehicle, you may be able to contact a dealership parts department and ask them if it is equipped.
Another option is to check the donor vehicle for alarm equipment. On VTSS equipped cars, there will often be an activation switch on the back of the door lock cylinder with a 2 wire harness. On 2007 and older Caravan's you can look for the hood pin trigger switch on the driver side near the hood hinge.
The factory scan tool will tell you if the BCM has VTSS enabled or not. However, to scan it you will need to plug it in. If you are unsure if you vehicle has VTSS or not, you will not want to plug in a BCM with VTSS. In this case, to be safe, unplug the PCM (engine computer) before turning on the car to check a used BCM. By doing this, your PCM will not "learn" VTSS if it does not already have it.
We can also test the modules for you on the bench and let you know how they are equipped.
What is SENTRY or SKIM key?
SKIM = Sentry Key Immobilizer Module
SENTRY is what Chrysler calls their passive immobilizer system. Passive means there is no extra action required by the driver to disable the engine immobilizer. There is a transponder inside the plastic portion of the ignition key with a unique I.D. that is read by the SKIM. If the SKIM recognizes the transponder as one that has been programmed to start the car, then it will disable the immobilizer and allow the vehicle to start. If the transponder is not recognized or if someone tries to steal the car by forcing the ignition lock on, then the fuel system is disabled and the vehicle will start for 3-5 seconds and die. It will do this 2 or 3 times and then will not start at all.
How do I know if my car has SENTRY?
From 1998 and up, Chrysler identified their SENTRY keys by a gray plastic head. Starting in 2004 some vehicles started using a different transponder identified by a tan plastic head. Most vehicles using the combination keyless entry remote key are equipped with an immobilizer, but not all.
Another way to check for the SENTRY system is to turn on the ignition until the dash lights illuminate. Look for a red dot about 1/4" in diameter to appear for 3 seconds and then extinguish. This is the immobilizer indicator. Some Jeep vehicles use a "no-key" symbol on the cluster to identify the system and some other vehicles have a red light on the top center of the dash. If it goes out after 3 seconds of turning on the ignition, then it is equipped with SENTRY and the system is functioning properly. If the light flashes or stay on solid, it means there is a fault in the immobilizer system. If this happens, we can help you diagnose the faults.
I plugged in a used PCM and now my car starts and dies, why?
This may be caused by the SENTRY immobilizer system. If your car is not equipped with the system, then the used PCM you bought may have it active. The SENTRY system allows the fuel pump to run and prime the system but then shuts it off if programming is not correct or if it does not see the correct programmed key. If your car is not equipped, we can remove the system from the used PCM. If your car is equipped, then we will need the PCM and immobilizer (SKIM) and we can program them for you.
I cannot license my car because of a VIN mismatch, why?
If you live in a metro area with environmental quality or DEQ inspections to license your vehicle, the VIN number in the engine computer must match your actual VIN. This may be an issue if the engine computer has been replaced by a used one from another vehicle. If you have failed to pass a VIN inspection, contact us.
Why did the dealer tell me I cannot install a used part?
Often this is true for the dealership and the equipment they are provided. The manufacturers want to sell new parts. So, they often "lock" an ECU once it is programmed to one vehicle. When the dealer tries to program it to another vehicle, their equipment will not allow it. Our specialty is "unlocking" these modules so they can be programmed again. Or, better yet, we can often program them in-house so they are ready to go when you install them. No trip to the dealer for programming will be necessary. You can send us your new, used, or reman PCM (engine computer) and we can program it and have it ready to run when you install it in the new vehicle. We can also initialize a new immobilizer module (SKIM, SKREEM). This can save you a trip to the dealership. Furthermore, many dealers will not / cannot program used PCM's. If you install a non-Sentry Key PCM in a vehicle equipped with Sentry Key, it will automatically become locked to that option. Sentry Key option cannot be removed with factory equipment, but if you send it to us we can repair it or remove the option.
